What is an Operating Engineer?

An Operating Engineer operates or repairs and services construction equipment used in the building or demolition of roads, dams, buildings, and power plants. An Operating Engineer also processes material used in the production of sand/gravel, concrete and asphalt.

The three classifications for training are:
1. Equipment operator

2. Heavy duty mechanic

3. Plant equipment operator

 

How do I qualify?

Must be at least 18 years of age

Have a high school diploma or GED

Pass a general knowledge test

Pass an oral interview

Pass a substance abuse test

What are the program specifics?

Length of program - 3 years

6,000 hours on-the-job training

Complete 512 hours of related classroom training with college credit

Six (6) month probationary period

Statewide program

Start at 60% of journeyman rate

Copy of high school diploma or GED

Completed application

Where do I apply?

Applications are taken on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month between 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. at the Casa Grande training site. The general knowledge test is administered at 10:00 a.m.
